Bachelor of science in general engineering from U.S. Naval Academy, 1983; Master in Public Administration from John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, 2004; Lieutenant Colonel, USMC; test pilot; hobbies: Running, cycling, weight training, sailing, hiking, fishing, hunting; NASA Fellowship Program, Massachusetts; he had been training as pilot for space shuttle Endeavor's STS-113 mission when he sustained a severe back injury, 2002; three months before the mission launched, NASA swapped in astronaut Paul Lockhart to take his place; ultimately Colonel Loria's injuries kept him permanently grounded and he requested a transfer back to the Marine Corps, leaving NASA in 2005.
