Colonel, USMC, Ret.; bachelor of science in engineering from Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio was awarded only after his first space flight (Glenn did not satisfy Muskigam's normal requirement for the number of senior year, in-residence courses taken, however he was later granted a waiver for this requirement and awarded a bachelor's degree.); recipient of nine honorary doctoral degrees; 59 combat missions during World War II; he resigned from NASA on 16.01.1964; since 1974 member of the US Senate (Democratic Party); hobbies: boating, skiing; in 1998 he was selected as PSP for STS-95.
